National Geographic: Health

The latest issue of National Geographic dedicated a section to the human limits...

We can last 45 days of starvation. 7 days of dehydration. Even 40% blood loss before it becomes fatal. The human body can withstand a lot more than we may give it credit for....

"A 64-year-old Duluth woman fell on the ice last December. Arthritis kept her from getting up. She lay in the snow for hours. Her temperature dipped to 70 degree F. Her heart stopped. She should have been a goner. But doctors revived her; today she is fine. Medical science is always learning more about how much a body can take. Yet as Duke University physician Claude Piantadosi notes, At some point its impossible to rescue yourself."

The Insomniac City Cycles

New movie by Ran Slavin is playing at the cinameteque.
I hear the sound is amazing in the film (:

Anyone want to go with me this week????

"In a bustling Tel Aviv, a man suffering from insomnia tries to remember if someone actually shot him in one the city's underground parking garages. He no longer knows what is real or a dream while the city increasingly reflects the human condition. A young woman wakes up in a hotel room in Shanghai from that dream by a mysterious phone call. A fragmented conversation with a stranger who seems to also be a lover, rolls into a dazed odyssey in what seems like another dream amidst nocturnal Shanghai."

The Herzliya Biennial for Contemporary Art

The Herzliya Biennial for Contemporary Art, curated by Picnic Magazine, was held the week of Sukkot (October 3-10).

Opening night was really beautiful with packed city streets, great preformances, and contemporary works ranging from sculture to video and even into dance, theater and astronomy. It was truly a freshly succesful event. I hope everyone was able to make it out there.

Marc Jacobs Misplaced?

Making a big scene in the fashion world, were Marc Jacobs 'misplaced heel' shoes. I am sure all woman are thinking the same thing as me. How does that work? These funky shoes not only work but they rock a new creative edge and experimental direction for Jacob's shoes.

RAISE YOUR CHILDREN

The term "Raise your child" comes from ancient Rome when the father would literally raise the child in his hand to accept a newborn baby into the family. Many babies were actually abandoned on the street if a father thought it was not worthy of his inheritance.

David Horvitz

Brooklyn based artist, David Horvitz fils his time with photography projects and has found a nitch specifically in social experiments.
1. Once he used google to find random fax numbers in different citites, looked up when sunset was in each city and faxed it randomly around. 'Today the sun will set at 5:45 pm' He was hoping this would interrupt someone's daliy routine and encourage them to go watch the sunset.
2. If you give him $3 he will send you an empty envelope. It is like sending you nothing. Or at least, it is sending you something that has traveled a journey that is the distance from him to you. (he has all sorts of projects like this one) http://www.davidhorvitz.com/if/

Sean versus John?

Sean Lennon, who is featured in the new fall edition of Purple Magazine has found himself defending his shoot. Pictured with his model girlfriend Kemp Muhl, Sean recreates the iconic Annie Leibovitz's Rolling Stones Cover of his parents, John and Yoko. People were actualy upset about this, saying 'how dare he'and found it offensive.

Sean's thoughts:
"I am really shocked. I can't believe that. It's weird. I thought controversial photos were other things than that. It seems that people are a little bit uptight these days, I guess."

Say Cheese

A camera that detects when someone smiles and then it triggers the shutter to go off??? That's already old technology.....

Now Sony has a camera that actually will edit your photo to place a 1-5 smile on your subject's face if they aren't smilling. Sony’s frown-fixing tool, which is called Happy Face Retouch, takes already captured images and turns their frowns or ambivalent looks into smiles. Though this was good for laughs, the eerie-looking grins pasted on faces reminded me of painted-on clowns’ mouths, but a handful of the Happy Face Retouches looked somewhat natural.

It was truly hillarious technology.

"Today, I joined a small disaster relief group. I remarked to the big, long-haired person beside me that it was surprising that I was the only female in the group. I got a cold stare. Later I asked another volunteer about that person. He answered, "Oh, her? She's my sister." FML"

Google Goats

Google has decided that goats are better for the environment than lawn mowers.... so they have let loose the animals to keep their lawns looking trim and prim.

The Satorialist

The Satorialist is the original documnetor of street style. After he worked in fashion for 15 years he started to discover that what he was putting in his showrooms wasn't refelcting what was going on in the streets. So he went to the sidewalks of New York and began photographing the most stylish of the bunch. His work has now expanded all oevr the world, as he documents what style really is. Take a look at his work on his blog .
