David Horvitz

Brooklyn based artist, David Horvitz fils his time with photography projects and has found a nitch specifically in social experiments.
1. Once he used google to find random fax numbers in different citites, looked up when sunset was in each city and faxed it randomly around. 'Today the sun will set at 5:45 pm' He was hoping this would interrupt someone's daliy routine and encourage them to go watch the sunset.

Sean versus John?

Sean Lennon, who is featured in the new fall edition of Purple Magazine has found himself defending his shoot. Pictured with his model girlfriend Kemp Muhl, Sean recreates the iconic Annie Leibovitz's Rolling Stones Cover of his parents, John and Yoko. People were actualy upset about this, saying 'how dare he'and found it offensive.

Sean's thoughts:
"I am really shocked. I can't believe that. It's weird. I thought controversial photos were other things than that. It seems that people are a little bit uptight these days, I guess."

Garden Soup

Garden Soup
Ingredients -

Broth
12 fresh tomatoes
1 medium onion
1 garlic clove
2 small potatoes
3 large carrots
2 medium zuchini
handful of green beans
1 hot pepper
1 can of corn
1 cup red lentils
1 tbsp worcester sauce
fresh basil
1 bay leaf
black pepper


Preparation:

1. Stew tomatoes, garlic and onion.

2. Add broth and add potatoes, lentils, and carrots.

3. Bring to a boil.

4. Add in worcester sauce, basil, bay leaf and the remaining vegetables. Let boil for a few minutes.

3. Reduce heat to low. Simmer 20 minutes.

4. Remove bay leaf. Season with fresh ground black pepper.

Enjoy with warm rice or fresh bread

A camera that detects when someone smiles and then it triggers the shutter to go off??? That's already old technology.....


Now Sony has a camera that actually will edit your photo to place a 1-5 smile on your subject's face if they aren't smilling. Sony’s frown-fixing tool, which is called Happy Face Retouch, takes already captured images and turns their frowns or ambivalent looks into smiles. Though this was good for laughs, the eerie-looking grins pasted on faces reminded me of painted-on clowns’ mouths, but a handful of the Happy Face Retouches looked somewhat natural.


It was truly hillarious technology.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a gyre of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean. The Eastern Garbage Patch is located roughly between California and Hawaii, while the Wetstern lies closer to Japan. They are estimated to be twice the size of Texas. The patch is composed of high concentrations of plastic and other garbage debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre.

Tavi Gevinson

Tavi Gevinson, a small 13-year-old girl, was invited to attended New York Fashion Week which ended Thursday. The diminutive eighth-grader has quickly blogged her way into the heart of the Fashion industry, recently appearing on the covers of LOVE and POP magazines. Tavi skipped school in Chicago to attend high-profile fashion shows in New York.

Tavi has been writing her blog, Style Rookie, for the last two years. The precocious Tavi has created a cult around her sense of fashion, and says she prefers hand-me-downs and vintage clothing.

Shell House

This house, which can be found in Japan, is a sculptural large shell shaped structure that's built in the woods of Karuizawa. The Shell House was designed by Japanese Architect Kotaro Ide. The concrete home building comprises two tubes with oval sections is meant to function as a vacation home, which is able to withstand the humid summers and cold winters of the region. To accomplish this, Kotaro Ide opted not to use the typical wood structure of two-storey house design in the area because of their susceptibility to decay easily. Instead, used reinforced concrete to construct two elliptical shell forms which are supposed to represent a conch. Ulin wood is used to create terraces around the Japan house with a courtyard into the centre of the main living areas.

Stefan Brown is a great little hidden treasure at 99 Allenby. The space used to be a fur shop in the fifties, but this beautiful house has been turned into a steakhouse. The place is divided into two areas: the in-house part and the garden part. If the weather is good, try getting a place in the garden. Madonna dined here with Tzipi Livni during her trip around Israel.

white sangria

This recipe goes down easy. It is a great drink, espcially for a party on a hot day when everyone will be drinking this refresher like water. Cheers!



Fruits best for white sangria:
1 bunch (large handful) Green grapes
1-2 Ripe pears, sliced
2 ripe Peaches, sliced. No need to peel.
1 small Nectarine
2 light colored plums, sliced or diced. There are nice golden ones available.
1 Lemon, sliced. Whatever fruits you choose don't forget the one lemon.
1/2 cup sugar
1 bottle Sauvignon Blanc wine.
1 cup Cointreau or Grand Marnier
1 cup Citrus Vodka (you choose your favorite brand)
Optional: 1-Liter Club Soda

Put the fruit in the large pitcher. It takes up quite a bit of room so the largest pitcher will be best, or split it into two regular-sized pitchers.

Add 1/2 cup sugar and the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc wine.

Stir the wine and the sugar with the fruit. You want the sugar to dissolve.

Add the Cointreau or Grand Marnier and the Citrus Vodka. Stir again. This is where you stop if you want the stronger version. Try to make this 30 minutes ahead of the party so the flavors blend. For the lighter version add the club soda. Stir again and you're ready to rock.

Chan-wook Park, the famous South Korean director, is coming out with a new film. Thirst which is out in theaters in Korean cinema is his next big success after his quite amazing film Old Boy. If you have never seen Old Boy (올드보이) I would say its a must. It is kind of a disturbing film but he really finds a creative cinematic way to unfold the trials of Oh Dae-Su, dealing with vengeance. His new movie Thirst picks up on this new vampire craze, but if its as creatively genius as Old Boy, lets see it!

Ansel Adams: A Life's Work

MoPA (Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park San Diego) brought Ansel Adams: A Life’s Work (May 23 – October 4, 2009). The exhibition will feature the life’s work of Ansel Adams, the most celebrated American photographer of the 20th century, from his most infamous and iconic pieces to his lesser known masterworks.

Not in SD?? The University of Arizona holds the archives of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Garry Winogrand, Harry Callahan, and others. Its really an amazing collection.

Narwhal

The narwhal, a species of whale, are massive amimals found in the arctic. The mystical belief was that narwhal tusks were the horns from the legendary unicorn. These horns were considered to have magic powers so Vikings and other northern traders were able to sell them for many times their weight in gold. The tusks were used to make cups that were thought to negate any poison that may have been slipped into the drink. During the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth received a carved and bejeweled narwhal tusk for £10,000—the cost of a castle at the time.

Window Browsing??

Chashama is a storefront gallery at 217 East 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan. It is one of twelve spaces run by an arts organization that provides low cost space for artists of many genres to create work, rehearse, and perform. Ms. Newman performed her work, “Blue,” an investigation of a primary color, at the venue in July. It was her first window performance.

This space sure gives a new meaning to storefront browsers. I just love when people blend mediums and create new inetresting ideas for art, fashion and entertainment.

BUFFALO!

First stop being home in Phoenix? BUFFALO EXCHANGE! I love this store. You can buy, sell, or trade clothing. They are choosy but that's why they are great! Every city should have a buffalo exchange or something just as great. It's the only way to shop (:

Treat Yourself

The best thing you can do is treat yourself weekly to something great! Maybe it's getting a manicure/pedicure, buying your favorite magazine, or getting a massage but whatever it may be - find a way to treat yourself weekly. It's good for the body and the soul and keeps you rejuvenated through each week. With everything we do in our busy (or not so busy) schedules, this tip is important to make time for. I found a school of Chinese medicine that has a practicing clinic for student's in their last years to gain experience. I started going every Tuesday 10am to get an acupuncture treatment and a massage for an hour and half. Since it was a school it was much cheaper. It's the most amazing thing I can do for myself.

You have to find something like I did, and pamper yourself <3

Book Club: The Rum Diary

If you loved Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, it's time to pick up another great book of his... The Rum Diary. It was written in the 1960s but wasn't actually published until 1998. The story follows the rum-drunk adventures of American journalists writing for a newspaper in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the 50s. Inspired by Thompson's own experiences as a journalist in San Juan, and taken from the people he met along the way, Thompson produces another great tale.

Good thing it's an easy read, because the movie is coming out soon.. well in 2010. The book is being made into a movie directed by Bruce Robinson who also worked with Hunter S Thompson to write the script. Of course who better to star in the movie then our very favorite, Johnny Depp.

So I have decided that finally finally I am going to buy a turn table, so I can finally play my collection of about 12 records (which will slowly expand). I found one: Crosley Archive Portable USB Turntable... its almost as good as my portable speakers/purse. Anyway if anyone hears of anything that is not so expensive or maybe one of my faithful music loving and vinyl playing tel aviv friends hears of anything... keep me in mind.

A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon's shadow, which includes most of eastern Asia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Ocean.

July 8, 2009 to commemorate our dear and late Michael, there was a flash mob dance tribute in Sweden.


More than 200 dancers were performing their version of "Do Re Mi", in the Central Station of Antwerp. With just 2 rehearsals they created this amazing stunt!

Don't worry they aren't all dancing.

Flash mobs also have pillow fights, dance parties, in London they had a silent disco in 2006 at various underground stations where people showed up with their own ipod/headphones and danced the night away. It's truly amazing to me how many people will get involved and how random it is. It is totally self organized. If you hear about a flashmob in your city... come on you have to join in.
